The advanced 1L222M Avtobaza-M electronic intelligence (ELINT) system has been spotted at Russia’s Hmeimim Air Base on the Syrian coast.
The system appeared in a recent report by Channel 1 Russia from Hmeimim. Topcor.ru shared a screenshot from the report showing the system inside the air base on February 15.
The state-of-the-art ELINT system was designed to detect pulse and continuous signals of air- and sea-based radars, friend-or-foe identification signals and TACAN [Tactical Air Navigation] systems signals.
Avtobaza-M can determine the parameters of signals and types of radars, track air and seaborne objects by their electronic signature and support higher air defense command and control posts with data.
The system can detect the signals of:
- Tactical aircraft radars from up to 200 km;
- AWACS and HAWKEYE aircraft radars from up to 400 km;
- Friend-or-foe identification and TACAN systems from up to 150 km;
- Sea-based radars and radio altimeters of cruise missiles within eye sight.
The older variant of the system, the 1L222 Avtobaza, was reportedly used by Iran to capture the US RQ-170 drone in 2011. Three years later, the system was allegedly used against US drones flying near Russia’s Crimea.
The deployment of the system will boost the electronic surveillance, electronic warfare and air-defense capabilities of Russian forces in Syria.
