On February 17, a convoy carrying logistic supplies and equipment for the US-led coalition came under attack in the southern Iraqi province of Dhi Qar.

An Iraqi security source told the Shafaq agency that the convoy was targeted with an improvised explosive device (IED) while it was passing on a highway leading to Nasiriyah city. According to the source, two vehicles were damaged.

“No mentionable [human] losses were recorded,” the unnamed source added.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq – ‘Ashab al-Kahf claimed responsibility for the attack in a brief statement. The group said that several Fijian contractors working for the US-led coalition were injured in the attack. A “heavy” IED was used in the operation.

Today’s attack in Dhi Qar is the most recent in a series of operations against US-led coalition forces in Iraq. Iranian-backed armed groups, like ‘Ashab al-Kahf, are responsible for most of these attacks.

Two days ago, a rocket attack targeted Erbil International Airport. A civilian contractor was killed and nine other people, including a US service member, were wounded.

These attacks are meant as a response to the assassination of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), and Iranian Quds Force Commander Maj. Gen. Qassim Soleimani that took place more than a year ago.
