ISIS Resurgence: Terrorists Ambush Syrian Army Unit In Eastern Homs

Late on February 16, ISIS cells ambushed a small unit of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the eastern countryside of Homs.

According to Amaq, the main news agency of the terrorist group, the attack took place in the outskirts of the town of al-Sukhnah. SAA troops were targeted with machine guns.

“Praise be to God, five [Syrian] service members were killed,” Amaq said in a statement.

The al-Sukhnah ambush was the most recent in a series of attacks by ISIS cells in Syria’s central region. On February 13, the terrorists attacked three posts of Iranian-backed forces to the east of the town of Khunayfis in southern Homs, where several phosphate mines are located.

ISIS cells launch their attacks from the Homs desert, which lays between eastern Homs and western Deir Ezzor. Hundreds of terrorists are reportedly taking shelter in the region.

The SAA backed by several pro-government factions and the Russian Aerospace Forces are working to contain ISIS threat in the central region. Last week, hundreds of Russian airstrikes hit the terrorist group’s personnel, hideout and equipment.

ISIS cells are stepping up their attacks in the central region. However, they have failed to expand their influence into the Hama-Aleppo-Raqqa triangle and western Deir Ezzor, so far.
