ISIS Commander Killed In Rare US Drone Strike On Northeastern Syria – Reports

FILE IMAGE: US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper

A senior commander of ISIS was reportedly killed in a US drone strike on an area controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeastern Syria.

The commander, identified by his nom de guerre “Abu Yassin al-Iraqi,” was killed when his car was struck by a US drone late on February 12. The incident reportedly took place in the town of Mu’aijil in northeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor. Two people, who were escorting al-Iraqi, were also killed in the strike.

Al-Iraqi, whose name reveals his Iraqi origin, was the head of ISIS Zakat Department. The department is responsible for collecting Islamic taxes from the terrorist group’s supporters and people living in its area of influence.

The terrorist was the successor of “Abu al-Ward al-Iraqi,” who was killed in a US-led coalition, SDF raid in Deir Ezzor on January 14 of 2020.

The US-led coalition is yet to confirm the death of al-Iraqi. The coalition usually announce such operations in an official statement within a few days.

If confirmed, this will be one of the few times the US eliminated an ISIS leader in northeastern Syria with a drone strike. Usually, coalition and SDF special forces assault or ambush high-profile terrorists in the region.
