Displaced Syrians Freeze To Death While Trying To Flee To Turkey

Submitted by Khaled Iskef

A Syrian man and woman froze to death, while they were trying to cross into Turkey from Syria.

A local source said that the man and the woman lost their lives inside the Turkish territory after they had crossed Asi River (also known as Orontes River) that separates the Azmarin area in the Salqin countryside northwest of Idlib from the Iskenderun area.

The source added that the river’s water level increased dramatically after the opening of the Qastoun Dam in the Al-Ghab Plain and heavy rains. The water flooded several roads that are often used to ‘unofficially’ enter into Turkey from northern Syria.

The source pointed out that people in Greater Idlib continue their attempts to cross to Turkey despite the resistance of Turkish authorities. There were multiple cases when Turkish border guards opened fire at refugees. This situation highlights the real living and security conditions in Idlib under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra).

People are forced to risk their lives under the hope of escaping territories under the terrorists’ rule. It should be noted that civilians in Idlib regularly become victims of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rule. Civilians have repeatedly protested demanding terrorists to leave the region, but this has had to real impact of the situation. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham often responds to protests with even more repressions and arrests.
