ISIS cells have carried out two separate attacks against pro-Syrian government troops in the country’s vast central region.

The first attack took place on January 6. ISIS terrorists targeted a vehicle of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) on Ithriyah road in eastern Hama with an improvised explosive device (IED). An officer of the Air Force Intelligence Directorate’s 25th Special Tasks Division was killed in the attack.

The second attack took place in western Deir Ezzor. A vehicle of the Palestinian pro-government al-Quds Brigade was struck with an IED, which had been planted by ISIS terrorists near the town of Kobajjep. A field commander and two fighters were killed on the spot.

ISIS cells in the central region launched dozens of attacks against the SAA and its allies from their main stronghold, the Homs desert, over the last few months.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the SAA and pro-government forces are combing the central region’s desert in search for ISIS cells nonstop.

Warplanes and attack helicopters of the Russian Aerospace Forces are reportedly providing Syrian troops operating in the central region with close air support.

“Russian jets have intensified their strikes, targeting positions in the deserts of al-Raqqa, Hama and Homs with nearly 70 airstrikes since last night,” the London-based monitoring group said in a report on January 7.

Despite these efforts, ISIS influence continues to grow in Syria’s central region. The terrorist group’s cells are reportedly receiving support from US-backed fighters based in the nearby area of al-Tanf.
