A drone strike has claimed the lives of four Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) fighters near the Syrian-Iraqi border, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on January 7.

The London-based monitoring group said the fighters were targeted by an unidentified drone as they were crossing from Iraq to Syria through an unofficial border crossing near the Syrian town of al-Bukamal.

“Four personnel, who were aboard the vehicle [which was targeted], were killed … two others were injured,” the SOHR’s report

Iraqi sources didn’t report any strikes on the border area between Syria and Iraq. Furthermore, the PMU, which usually announce any attack on its fighters, did not acknowledge any losses in the area in the last 24 hours.

Last month, a number of reports claimed that a commander of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was killed in a strike on the Syrian-Iraqi border. Later, these claims were dismissed by Tehran.

Iranian-backed forces, including several units from the PMU, are heavily present on the Syrian-Iraqi border. These forces are preventing ISIS from reclaiming the region.

The SOHR’s claims may be true as the situation on the Syrian-Iraqi border is underreported in general. Nevertheless, these claims may also be a part of the ongoing propaganda war against Iran and its regional allies.
